curly is an HP Intel-based workstation with the FreeBSD operating system and an Apache Web server. This system will be used both as my office computer and for research about computer-based communication. The Web data on curly is stored in MySQL and Oracle DBMSs, indexed sequential files, and flat files. CGI languages include C, COBOL, Perl, PHP, and Python.
For the most part, the Web pages have been designed to convey information clearly, to be readable on any browser (there are nonframe versions of all frame pages, there are no public Java scripts or applets and NO JAVASCRIPT!), and to be quick to load over the Internet (the pages of pictures are obvious exceptions). Most of the pages do not use large images, distracting backgrounds, embedded sound files, or "dancing bears." All images in the picture section are in JPEG format for their small size when compared to other graphic formats. Backgrounds have not been used for pages where the information is deemed important and clarity is essential. There are some rare pages where clarity gave way, in a moment of weakness, to entertainment (the subliminal page is one example).
Material may appear or disappear without notice. This is particularly true at the end of an academic semester when class information is archived. Every effort is taken to maintain other pages of public interest. If information has been removed but is still desired, please contact Dr. F. Layne Wallace (an e-mail link is given below).
Information about old curly incarnations is also available. Comments and/or questions should be addressed to Dr. F. Layne Wallace.
